How to Get Around Las Vegas Without a Car: The Ultimate 2026 Budget Guide
One of the most common questions first-time visitors ask is: “Do I need to rent a car in Las Vegas?”
The answer is no. In fact, renting a car can actually be a massive headache due to expensive resort parking fees and brutal Strip traffic. However, you absolutely need a game plan for getting around.
Here is my no-nonsense, local guide to navigating the Las Vegas Strip without a car, keeping your budget intact and your feet from blistering.
What is the coolest (and cheapest) way to get around right now?
The Zoox Robotaxi (Currently FREE)
If you have been to Vegas recently, you have probably seen these futuristic, boxy, teal-colored vehicles driving around with no driver. These are Zoox robotaxis, and as of 2026, they are completely free to ride for the public.
You can book them via their app, and they operate point-to-point between designated stops. They are fantastic for getting to specific destinations like Topgolf or major resorts on the North Strip.
The Local Warning: Because it is free and highly demanded, wait times can routinely hit 15 to 45 minutes. It is a fantastic, futuristic experience, but do not rely on a Zoox if you are running late for a dinner reservation or a show!
How can I avoid walking in the heat for free?
The Hidden Casino Trams
If you are staying on the West side of the Strip, this is your ultimate cheat code. There are three free, air-conditioned trams that connect major resorts, allowing you to bypass massive stretches of the Strip without walking in the 110-degree summer heat:
- Mandalay Bay – Luxor – Excalibur Tram: A huge time-saver that perfectly connects the far south end of the Strip. (Tip: Excalibur is one of our favorite Budget-Friendly Hotels!).
- Park MGM – Aria – Bellagio Tram: The best way to jump from the South-Central area right to the Bellagio fountains.
(Note: The old Mirage-Treasure Island tram is currently closed while the Mirage undergoes construction to become the Hard Rock Hotel. However, TI is still one of our favorite spots. Check out our Treasure Island Insider’s Guide).
What is the fastest way to travel the East side of the Strip?
The Las Vegas Monorail
While the free trams dominate the West side, the Monorail dominates the East side (running from MGM Grand all the way up to the Sahara).
It is not free (tickets usually start around $6 for a single ride, or you can buy multi-day passes), but it completely bypasses Las Vegas Boulevard traffic. If you need to get from the MGM Grand to the LINQ Promenade on a busy Friday night, the Monorail will beat an Uber every single time.
Can I just walk everywhere?
The Reality Check: Please don’t try.
If you look at a map, it might look like a quick stroll from the Wynn down to New York-New York. It is not.
The casinos in Las Vegas are massive, and the blocks are incredibly long. What looks like a “next door” walk on Google Maps can easily take 20 to 30 minutes just to get from the center of one casino to the center of the next.
Local Tip: Never try to walk the entire Strip in a single day. Break your trip into sections (e.g., “Today we explore the South Strip, tomorrow we explore the Center”). If you try to walk everywhere in a single day, especially in the heat, your feet will be destroyed before the sun goes down.
