The Ultimate First-Timer's Checklist: 7 Things You Must Do in Las Vegas (2026)
So, you are finally coming to Las Vegas, but you have no idea where to start? Between the massive mega-resorts, the endless restaurant options, and the overwhelming amount of shows, planning your first trip can feel impossible. (If you are struggling to understand the map, check out our Ultimate Guide to the Strip Layout first!)
While we already have a guide on the Top 6 Rookie Mistakes to Avoid, this article is all about action. If this was the only time you ever got to visit Las Vegas, here are the 7 things you absolutely must do in 2026.
1. See the City from Above (Without Paying for the Observation Deck)
You want to see the neon lights from above, but you don’t necessarily want to pay $35 just to stand on an observation deck.
TIP
The Insider Secret: Go to a rooftop lounge instead! You still get the breathtaking, panoramic views, but your “entrance fee” goes toward a delicious cocktail.
If you are downtown, visit the Legacy Club on the 60th floor of the Circa Resort. If you are on the Strip, head over to the Skyfall Lounge on the 64th floor of the W Las Vegas (formerly the Delano) for an incredible sunset view looking directly up Las Vegas Boulevard.
2. Walk Through the Themed Mega-Resorts
Las Vegas spent billions of dollars bringing the world to the desert. You must spend a day simply walking through the most elaborately themed hotels. Walk across the Brooklyn Bridge at New York-New York, stroll under the Eiffel Tower at Paris, and ride a gondola through the canals inside The Venetian.
Most importantly, you have to visit the Bellagio.
NOTE
Must-See: The Bellagio Conservatory & Botanical Gardens is open 24/7 and is completely free. The massive floral displays change five times a year!
3. Conquer a Legendary Buffet
You cannot leave Las Vegas without experiencing a true Vegas buffet. It is a rite of passage.
While there are many good options, the crown jewel in 2026 remains the Bacchanal Buffet at Caesars Palace. It is massive, featuring hundreds of daily offerings ranging from endless crab legs to dim sum and made-to-order crepes. Come hungry. (For more options, check out our Ultimate Las Vegas Buffet Ranking).
4. Dine with a Celebrity Chef
Las Vegas has the highest concentration of celebrity chefs in the world. Whether it is Guy Fieri, Lisa Vanderpump, or Buddy Valastro, you need to eat at one of their flagship restaurants.
Our top recommendation for first-timers? Gordon Ramsay’s Hell’s Kitchen outside Caesars Palace. Order the iconic Lobster Risotto and the Beef Wellington—you won’t regret it.
5. Experience the Chandelier Bar
Las Vegas has thousands of bars, but none are quite like the Chandelier Bar at The Cosmopolitan. The bar is literally housed inside a massive, multi-story crystal chandelier.
TIP
Secret Menu Item: Order the “Verbena” cocktail. It comes with a small, yellow “buzz button” flower. You chew the flower first, which completely numbs your mouth and sends your tastebuds into overdrive before you sip the drink. It is a wild sensory experience!
6. Catch a World-Class Show
Every resort on the Strip hosts incredible entertainment, and you must dedicate at least one evening to a show. However, it is crucial to pick the right type of show for your group.
WARNING
Know Before You Go: Not all Cirque-style shows are kid-friendly!
- For Adults Only: Go see Absinthe at Caesars Palace. It is a raunchy, hilarious, and jaw-dropping mix of comedy and incredible acrobatics inside an intimate circus tent.
- For Families: If you have kids with you, stick to Mystère at Treasure Island (the classic Cirque du Soleil experience) or the breathtaking water-based spectacle “O” at the Bellagio.
7. Explore Fremont Street (Old Vegas)
The Strip is amazing, but you have to visit where it all started: Downtown Las Vegas.
Fremont Street is about 5 miles north of the main Strip. Do not attempt to walk there; take an Uber, a taxi, or the Deuce bus. You want to go after sunset to experience the Viva Vision canopy—a massive LED screen suspended over the pedestrian street that plays free light shows every hour on the hour.
